In 2014 there began a series of four lunar eclipses called the “tetrads.” These occur periodically throughout history and because they seem to coincide with major events they have been the subject of various religious scripture. The pairing of the tetrads with actual events is coincidental, if you look for connections you will almost always find one in your subjective filter. But as we set out to enjoy the series of eclipses and the red lunar color of the post-umbra, we were bombarded with religious propaganda and it was clear to us that a song was necessary. We had already planned to write an ominous sounding progressive piece, so to really set the mood the song opens with an actual reading from the Book of Matthew and the Book of Joel. (And I will show wonders in the heavens..etc.) But the lyrics are more an examination of the myth of perfection – in life, love, work, play…perfection is both transient and somewhat of a falsehood. The bridge is a fairly long soliloquay with a nod to Arthur C. Clarke’s sci fi masterpiece “Childhood’s End,” where humans accept an alien utopia at the cost of their heritage and culture. “Perfection still eludes like recurring déjà vu” and those fleeting moments are as rare as a blood red moon.
